I found these pictures on Google after having researched into contemporary Elizabethan make up and styling. The textures in each are what particularly caught my eye. I love using texture in my work, so this is always an appealing feature to me.

Practising Elizabethan Make-up...

In this session we practised doing an Elizabethan Make-Over, concentrating on the white base, whitening out the eyebrows and using a pink blush to re create the cheeks that were very common in the Elizabethan era. The make up, although it looks quite dramatic was actually very simple. They didn't focus on the eyes, or eyebrows, the main focus was whitening out the skin. I worked on Alice. I Started off by Cleansing, Toning and Moisturising. I used Illamasqua's skin base 000. I used a foundation brush to get the coverage, I also mixed in Illamasqua's satin prima. I found the base wasn't buffing nicely in to the skin, I think this is because I put too much prima in to the base, for some reason the base was going patchy on the skin and was refusing to buff. I then took it all off and started again with just foundation, and after working it in to the skin for some time by buffing away, it eventually went smooth. Not as smooth as I would like, but I have to be honest, I think the Illamasqua foundation is very thick and needs a lot of work to get the perfect base. I feel that I need to use this product more so that I can get used to its texture and find a knack to creating the perfect base with this particular product. I then used Illamasqua's translucent powder to set the base. I used a soft sponge to do this, gently dabbing in to the base.  

 

 

 

Once I had done the base I then used the white foundation and an eyebrow brush to work it in to the hairs. I worked it in brushing the hairs front and back making sure that the product got right in between the hairs. I then applied a pink tone of blush on the apple of the cheeks and blended it out. I think by this time I was disheartened that my base application didn't work out how I would have liked it too, so I wasn't happy with the overall look but I will keep practising until I feel confident.

Contour, Highlight and Blush

For editorial and TV make up, highlighting, contouring and blush can make a dramatic difference if done correctly. These 3 steps enhance your natural features. I practised on Emma, whose skin is combination but her tone is dark. I found it a little tricky matching her skin tone at first but after mixing a few colours and testing them out on her neck I finally found her match. I used a foundation brush to get coverage then a powder brush to really buff in the foundation. I learnt from the Perfect Base session that buffing it in really well, over and over again creates a really smooth base, so I spent time on making sure I concentrated on this. When it came to the highlighting I struggled to find the right shade, and I used a shade which was too yellow, after trying to buff it out I ended up with a shade that made Emma look slightly ill! I definitely need to practise matching the concealer colours to skin tones.

 

I feel that I also need to practise contouring much more as well. I understand where it should go on the face, but I still can't quite get the knack, I think I need to be more confident when I do it. I need to focus on blending it so that I can create the definition needed.

Perfect Base...

 

 Everybody wants a perfect base when Make-up is concerned! Today we learnt how to create a perfect base using our Kryolan Foundation pallets and Derma Concealer pallets. We started off by Cleansing, Toning and Moisturising the skin making sure that it was well prepped for base application. I worked on Ley, who has dry skin and a few spots towards the outside of her face. Normally it would be quite common to have to mix the colours in the pallet to get a colour match, and to do this you would test out the colours on the clients neck. But as Ley has such pale skin I didn't need to do this as the lightest colour in the Kryolan palette was even still a little darker than Ley's skin tone. I used a foundation brush to get coverage on the face, up on to the ears and on to the neck. I then used a powder brush to buff the foundation in to the skin. Because Ley's skin is quite dry I had to spend a little longer working the foundation in to the skin to get an even and pure complexion. To highlight and conceal I used 2 shades lighter and matched this to Ley's skin tone again... I then highlighted underneath her eyes and also any blemishes or spots. I buffed the concealer in making sure that my base was flush. I then used Illamasqua's Translucent Powder gently on the face using a sponge to set the base also meaning that any unwanted shine on the t zone would disappear.

 

I found it quite hard to get the perfect base straight away as Ley's skin was quite dry. But I worked the foundation in to the skin for quite some time and eventually it smoothed out. After having a bit of a challenge as the skin was quite dry I feel much more confident in creating a perfect base, the more you buff the more flawless the base becomes.

We are certainly on the edge of vast new unprecedented worlds, cosmic changes in culture, economy and society (and ironically the possible dissolution of the United Kingdom). But are our new worlds brave, cowardly, explorative or degenerative? It could be said the old Elizabethans plundered the new worlds. Perhaps now we can only plunder ourselves and call it trade."

 

In response to Edward Bond's observation of our current 'New Elizabethan Age', present 2-3 images that sum up your vision of a contemporary Elizabethan.  This can be via a ppt or a link to your blog page.  You will be required to discuss the images in class and question whether the image is indeed reflective of a New Elizabethan ideal in terms of make-up, hair and styling.

 

ANGELINA JOLIE

 

Personally when I think of the 'New Elizabethan Age', Angelina Jolie springs to mind straight away! Not only is she an iconic beauty and an outstanding actress giving the nation beautiful and perfect performances to watch.. she is also an inspirational role model who's generosity continues to help less fortunate people all around the world. Angelina was filming in Cambodia for Lara Croft when she witnessed humanitarian crisis. She was thankful for this experience as she later said that it brought to her a greater understanding of the world she lives in. Angelina has continued to support several charities and has donated an exceptional amount of money to these organisations. After 10 years of Angelina being a goodwill ambassador she was promoted to being a Special Envoy to High Commisioner, Antonio Guterres. Like Elizabeth, I feel that Angelina has a similar power in the sense that because she is so well respected for her generosity and gratitude people want to be like her and follow in similar footsteps. Like the woman of the Elizabethan era, they worshiped the ground the queen walked on, and wanted to be her, taking it as far as changing their whole appearance no matter how much damage it caused them, i.e. using chemicals on there skin and in their hair which in some cases, killed them! Angelina has a certain aura about her, her elegance and will power is infectious and this is why I am comparing her to Queen Elizabeth. Queen Elizabeth also had an aura about her, almost entrancing her loyal followers. People looked up to her, as they do Angelina. They are both (in each of their era's) looked upon as beautiful, powerful striking women. People want to BE them.

 

 

The above picture caught my eye as it reminded me of Queen Elizabeth. Even when in a room full of men, she still had power, authority and ruled the situation. She believed in herself and believed in her theories. She believed she could take on any situation, and win. As does Angelina, she believes that the less fortunate have hope and she will continue to help them until she dies. She believes that if we all stand together and work as one, we can help them. Her dedication and status have helped her raise more awareness.

 

 

I wanted to put the above picture on my blog as I feel it explains exactly what Angelina is about and what it is she is setting out to do. This stunning picture shows true emotion from Angelina.

 

 

 

 

Again, the above picture shows authority and power. Something that Queen Elizabeth I had perfected. I love the fact that it says "TIME TO ACT" on the stand. Its pretty self explanatory really...

Sir DAVID ATTENBOROUGH 

 

 

Sir David Attenborough... A legend in my eyes. His passion is perfection. "A National Treasure". I believe he has influenced many in all sorts of ways. For me, growing up watching his programmes inspired me in so many different ways.. There is so many ways you can take inspiration from David, from an artistic point of view, colours, textures, shapes, lines.. and so many more. He has taught the nation about the world we live in.. I think that we should all be so grateful and thankful that he lives and breaths his passion and presents to  the world we live in such beauty. People respect Sir David Attenborough. They look up to him because of his dedication and love for what he does. He wants to please people and teach them about the wonderful universe. I feel that I can compare this to Queen Elizabeth I as she too had a very similar outlook on life, she was a very dedicated queen and believed in her people. Just as Sir David does.
